Older homes are usually made out of wood. This wood ages and warps, which can lead to tiny gaps in your walls, or around your windows and doors. Mice can squeeze through remarkably small holes. The gaps around windows and doors (particularly leading to the basement) are often all they need.

At the same time, rats are capable of gnawing through wood and working their way into your home.

This is why it’s incredibly important to find and fix these gaps as soon as possible to prevent an infestation, or sky-high heating bills.

What Should I Do if I Have Mice or Rats?

Your local hardware store is full of products (like traps or poisons) that you can use to get rid of your infestation. It’s pretty debatable how well any of them work, despite what their labels say.

It’s always best to bring in professional help and call an exterminator at the first signs of a rodent infestation. Not only will they help you get rid of the mice or rats you have right now, but they can also keep rodents from coming back.
