Picking up these pests in hotels when you travel is one of the most common and the most frustrating ways to get them. You painstakingly keep a clean home, but you still get bed bugs by going on vacation.

Here is what travelers need to know about bed bugs, whether you’re going to another town or another country.

How to Tell if a Hotel Has Bedbugs

The truth of the matter is that even the cleanest and most expensive hotels are not invincible to infestation. However, the good ones know that their reputation is on the line, so they’re more likely to take preventative steps and spring into action quickly and thoroughly if bed bugs are reported.

You can simply Google the hotel you’re staying at and bed bugs to see if there have been in reported issues from other travellers. It should show up in the reviews, as most travellers are genuinely outraged when they pick up bed bugs from a hotel and want the world to know.

There are also a few things you can do when you enter the room. You can actually strip the mattress and give it a firm shake. This may make some of the little pests visible.

You can also do a thorough check for stains on the mattress and linen. You will be looking for anything that looks like stains from droppings, blood smears, or even leftover bugs.

Discovering any of these things is a good enough reason to leave the room immediately.

What to Do if You Find Beg Bugs

Do not stay in this room. Leave the room immediately and complain to the hotel right away. They should be very apologetic and do everything they can to fix the issue and make things right by you.

However, if they move you to a better room and you still find a problem, it’s time to find another hotel, massively inconvenient as it may be.

However, let’s say you didn’t find anything when you checked in, but you wake up with bites on day 2 of your trip. That’s not ideal.

You can still go into damage control mode by isolating your personal items as best you can, and washing all of your clothes in hot water and putting them in the dryer on the hottest setting for 60 minutes if you can.
