Warning: Cockroaches Carry Bacteria That Can Make Your Family Sick

Posted on 2019-09-18

We don’t simply exterminate cockroaches because they’re gross and unsightly. You need to remove them because they’re dangerously unhealthy.

An infestation can cause serious health risks for you and your family. The longer you leave the problem, the more risks you are exposing yourself to.

Let’s take a look at the various health risks they pose.

Contaminating Your Food

When cockroaches get at your food, they can immediately contaminate it with their saliva or their droppings with bacteria they have picked up. Even a very small amount can lead to some big health problems such as:

  • Food poisoning

  • Diarrhea

  • Staphylococcus (A.K.A Staph) infections

  • Salmonella

  • Streptococcus

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Children are particularly susceptible, with less adapted immune systems.

If you’re experiencing a cockroach infestation, it’s crucial you protect your food as much as possible. That means keeping food in airtight and sealed Tupperware or other types of containers. You will also have to keep the kitchen as clean as possible, with frequently cleaned dishes and wiped counters.

Of course, the best solution is to always call an exterminator and get rid of the problem instead of just treating the effects.

Airborne Threats

Their bacteria can also be spread through the air, as their dead skin and dropping contaminate the air your family is breathing, much in the same way a dust mite would.

This can severely aggravate respiratory conditions such as allergies or asthma, making the home unlivable or extremely dangerous for people who are afflicted.

They have even been known to cause asthma to develop in people who are not previously asthmatic!

And again, don’t delay or suffer needlessly. Call in pest control today!

Personal Contact

There is a common misconception out there that cockroaches don’t bite. Yes, they do bite!

They don’t carry any venom, but again, they do carry all sorts of bacteria that they have picked up. A cockroach bite may not be particularly painful, but it can certainly be uncomfortable, as it can cause itching or a rash to develop.

Your best bet is not to give them the chance to bite and to call an exterminator as soon as you see the first one.
