What Health Risks Do Bed Bugs Pose?

Any sort of infestation always brings some sort of health risk. But what type of risks are you facing from the dreaded bed bugs?

There are certainly serious financial consequences. You might find yourself having to replace furniture or clothing. But are there serious health consequences?

Yes. Which is why you should call an exterminator as soon as possible!

The Health Risks Bed Bugs Bring Into Your Home

Bed bugs have not been proven to carry infectious diseases, unlike a cockroach or mouse/ rat infestation.

However, bed bugs bite. In most cases, the bites are red and you can experience minor itching or discomfort. But, in more severe cases, people have had major allergic reactions to bed bug bites. And, you likely won’t know you’re allergic until you have already had a reaction.

There have also been documented cases of anaphylaxis, which is a serious and body-wide reaction. You could also experience secondary infections to the skin from the bite, which could include:

Impetigo: A highly contagious skin infection that mainly affects infants and children. This shows up as puffy and painful red/yellow sores all over the body. This could take weeks to heal, and require the help of antibiotics.

Ecthyma: A deep ulcerative infection of the skin. It is similar to Impetigo, but it happens under the skin.

Lymphangitis: Tender redness around your glands. In many cases, it goes away with no complications. However, a prolonged condition can become very serious.

Everyone reacts differently to a bed bug bite, so don’t take any risks and call pest control immediately.

The Community Health Effect

It’s important to remember that when you’re dealing with any sort of infestation, it’s not just you and your family that’s impacted.

Nobody in your household may be experiencing any serious side effects or problems from the bites. But, you can’t predict how it will impact the people down the hall in your apartment building.

This is why swift and decisive action needs to be taken as quickly as possible. You need to contain and solve the problem so it doesn’t spread any further, or needlessly put anyone else at risk to possible complications.
